Stop Sugar Cravings

by Susan on December 20, 2009

A major nutrition obstacle we must overcome when trying to lose fat is to stop sugar cravings.

Why? Because what we put in our bodies is the most important determinate in the amount of fat we carry on our bodies.

The shocking sugar truth is that Americans consume so many sugary foods and so many foods with hidden sugars in it that the average person can eat 160 pounds of sugar per year!

Sugar is everywhere.

  • cakes
  • cookies
  • candy
  • cereal
  • soda
  • canned foods
  • spaghetti sauces
  • condiments
  • energy drinks
  • yogurt
  • ice cream
  • dried fruit
  • alcohol
  • fruit drinks
  • prepackaged foods
  • fast foods

It is important to be aware of what you are eating and the amount of sugar they contain.

Sugar isn’t always sugar. Read food labels and take note of the ingredients.

Here are a few names sugar can go by:

sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, corn syrup, honey, maple syrup, molasses, glucose, lactose, maltose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, dextrose, sorghum, galactose, fruit juice concentrate.

It is important for fat loss that all processed sugar be removed from the diet.

So, let’s say you hear what I am saying and you decide to go cold turkey and stop eating all foods containing the addictive material.

But you don’t get very far before you get your first sugar craving.

We’ve all had them. An urge so strong to demolish a pack of cookies or eat a tub of ice cream that you find yourself giving in time and time again.

We would all have a much higher chance for success if we could just keep those urges under control.

So, what do we do to stop sugar cravings?

Here are a few ideas:

1. Brush your teeth

2. Evaluate your emotional reasons for wanting to eat.

3. Eliminate soda completely and do NOT replace with diet soda. Diet soda can do even more damage than regular soda and actually triggers sugar cravings.

4. Find healthy recipes that you can make that satisfy your cravings without all the sugar.

5. If you do cave to a craving make sure you stop at one or two bites only.

6. Find your inner motivation for avoiding sugar in the first place. Stand naked in front of the mirror and see if you still want to give in.

7. Have a piece of fruit.

8. Try a 24 hour fast. (I personally have found the best success with fasting and curbing sugar cravings.) ese_mikeandjuliet

9. Enlist social support. Look to your family, friends and/or personal trainer/coach to help keep you on track.

But most importantly, stay strong.

Kekich credo #18: Find out what works and then do more of it. Focus first on doing the right things and then on doing things right by mastering the details. A few basic moves produce most results.
