Corn-Fed vs Grass Fed Beef

by Susan on January 10, 2010

I’m back to continue talking about how corn is in everything and it is making you sick and fat!

In the last post the Omnivore’s Dilemma – Industrialized Corn Is Making You sick and Fat, I talked about how corn is being fed to animals and how that is effecting the food you eat.

The two issues I discussed was E coli and ammonia.

Today I have two more ways that the meat you buy from grocery stores is making you sick and fat.

1. Antibiotics: The cows rumen, aka, their second stomach, is really only designed to digest grass. It does not contain the necessary enzymes to break down copious amounts of grain.

During normal rumination, gasses are produced that are expelled by belching. However, when the rumen is filled with corn normal rumination cannot occur and it fills up with gas and gets trapped there.

The cow will begin to suffocate as the bloated rumen presses against the lungs.

The cows can also become acidotic (high acid levels) which can lead to a multitude of diseases such as pneumonia, coccidiosis, feedlot polio, etc.

To prevent the animals from being sick, farmers add antibiotics to the animal’s feed, which helps buffer the acidity of the rumen and prevent all of the potential diseases and conditions.

And consequently, when you eat meat from these animals you are also ingesting antibiotics.

2. Hormones: OK, this isn’t exactly corn related but it is factory farm related and another testament to how the food industry only cares about making money.

The animals are ingested with hormones to help them build as much lean tissue on the animal is possible.

How does this affect you?

Ingesting the extra synthetic hormones has been suspected to increase the incidence of cancer and early onset of puberty in kids.

It is up to you whether or not you want to take that chance.

The bottom line is that farmers expose the animal to things like ammonia and antibiotics  as a direct result of the unnatural diet of corn they are fed.

If you would like to steer clear of the antibiotics or the synthetic hormones in factory farmed meat, try organic meat from grass fed animals.

These free range animals have a very nice life. They get to roam around the pasture, eat as much or as little grass as they would like, and are never filled with ammonia, hormones, or antibiotics.

Give it a try, free range meat has a really great “clean” taste that you can’t beat. Personally, I don’t eat a lot of meat but when I do I try to make is free range.

I promise that if you start eliminating the factory farmed meats from your diet you will feel a lot better and perhaps even lose a few pounds.
