Remember, the best ab exercises are those that use your entire body and are anti-rotational exercises.
Meaning, the best ab exercises are where you use your core to stabilize your body and keep it in one position while weight or gravity tries to force it to rotate.
One of the best ab exercises is the lying hip extension.
The lying hip extension is great for beginners who want ot increase the strength of their core to prevent low back injuries.
Here is a very quick video I made demonstrating how to do it:
You might be wondering how the lying hip extension is one of the best ab exercises when it doesn’t so much concentrate on your abdominals.
Well, it does concentrate on your glutes and your lower back which are both very important components of your core. The abdominals are not the only muscle groups that make up your core or that are important for stabilizing your body.
Start thinking of your abs as one part of your core, and that you have to strengthen your entire core to prevent low back injuries.
Try incorporating the lying hip extension into your workout routine 3 x per week. Start by holding for 30 seconds for 3 sets. Gradually work up to holding the position for 2-3 minutes before moving on to more advances core exercises, especially those within my Best Ab Exercises video series.
Do a little something – anything – everyday that will move you closer to your goals!

Susan Campbell, MS, CSCS
