How To Make Kale Chips

How to Make Kale Chips

A few months back I saw a facebook post about buying kale chips from a company I follow.

Kale chips? WTH? And gross.

Besides, I’m really not much of a snacker…..

But then I shared the post on my facebook page and one of my friends and I got into a really cool conversation about them. My friend, Bittu, and I went to grad school together a million years ago. She has gone on to become a Ph.D. because she is super smart. But she is also a vegetarian and always looking for new and exciting ways to prepare foods.

Bittu told me that she had just made a batch of kale chips a few days earlier and said that, and I quote, “they were amazing”.

Amazing? Kale chips?

I’ve never described my experiences with green leafy vegetables before as amazing, but I was listening because I know she is a smarty. I would absolutely need to learn how to make kale chips!

She gave me a few pointers, and I decided to give it a shot. I’ve sitting here eating kale chips right now and getting it all over my key board. I felt like I had to get this in a post quickly before I lost my will to convince you to give it a shot.

As I picked up my first kale chip and ate it, I realized exactly why they were called “chips”. Light, airy, crispy, and salty. I love me some salt!

They don’t really taste like kale anymore, but I can’t really describe the taste exactly. But I will tell you that you won’t be able to eat just one.

And I hope I don’t need to deliberate on the benefits of kale. It’s a green leafy vegetable, packed with vitamins and minerals your body needs and its also a veggie you can eat and eat and eat all day and it will never raise your insulin levels very much. So, it’s awesome if you follow a plant based diet, a primal diet or a paleo diet.

OK, smarty, go get some kale and follow my lead here:

Roasted Kale Chips:

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

2. Wash kale and cut into chip smaller pieces.

3. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet and toss with olive oil.

4. Season to taste. Salt, pepper, etc.

5. Bake for about 30 minutes.

6. Be amazed. Or confused. Whichever.

I may actually try them with coconut oil sometime.

Have you ever made kale chips?

Are you going to give them a try? Why or why not?

If you have or will be, let us know if you come up with any cool spices combos for them!

Ok when I read Kale chips, I echoed your “WTH”.

I’m not gonna lie, the thought of Kale chips makes my tongue crawl down my throat, but it’s such a bizarre notion that of course I’m gonna try them. :)

I’ll be sure to report back with my successes and/or failures

Thanks for sharing!

I’m going to try these! I’ve only juiced, steamed, and made salad with kale so far. I want to try the chips because I’ve heard others like them, and I like to eat vegetables.

Thanks Varaneka, try adding a little kale to a smoothie too – can’t taste it!

Hi Susan,

I love kale chips. A healthy alternative to eating chips. I’ve only baked them in the oven one time and I burned them. Yuck! But I’ll try them again very soon.

I made them in my dehydrator..that takes too long. I like adding Herbs de Provence, apple cider vinegar..I imagine balsamic vinegar would be good too. A little salt and pepper and it’s a great healthy snack. Oh, and a little olive oil. ;)

Thanks for sharing and good to see you. I like your new layout.

Thanks Evelyn, always trying to evolve! Great to hear from you!

Good ideas for other things to add to them. I was concerned that just EVOO and salt might be boring but it is pretty good. Might try to do a little salt and vinegar next time!
