Sitting is Bad For You

So bad, in fact, that it is literally killing you. Check out the infographic below for the truth about sitting down.

  • We are now averaging 9.3 hours sitting down per day.
  • Sitting increases our risk of death up to 40%.
  • Sitting makes us fat.
  • Obese people sit for 2.5 more hours per day than thin people.
  • People with sitting jobs have twice the rate of cardiovascular disease as people with standing jobs.
  • Those who sit 3+ hours per day on the couch watching TV are 64% more likely to die from heart disease.
  • The recommended 30 minutes per day of physical activity is not enough to counteract 8 hours of sitting each day at our jobs. You must interrupt sitting.
  • Interrupt sitting with walking, stretching, and stair climbing.

Awesome graphics Susan.

I have to say that it’s great to see that my parents were WRONG! Turns out that “good” posture (sitting up straight) it NOT good for you. Think about that the next time you complain about me driving the car like I’m laying down. :)

Tyler, the people at my office use chairs that look like an office chair mated with a bar stool. It gives them the ability to sit down periodically if they get tired, and helps them feel like they’re at happy hour ALL day (It’s 5 o’clock somewhere). One person at my office requested a standing work station, and now several more are following her lead. Seems to be a trend…Goodbye secretary butt! :)

Standing workstation is the way to go – I have been standing a lot lately – I’m standing now!

I started to laugh when you made that laying down driving comment. I do the same thing!

This post is horrifying to me. I wake up, drive to work, work for 8 hours at a computer, drive home, maybe go to the gym, sit at a computer for 4-6 more hours working online, sleep, repeat. I will surely die in 20 years or less according to this post. Honestly though, my body shows it. I am in nowhere near the shape I was in, in my 20′s. Great post.

Thanks Steve, I doubt there are many people who really don’t sit more then they should. We are all in a similar boat. Have you ever considered a standing desk? At least while you are home doing the 4-6 online you can be standing. And that’s a ton better – I’ve been trying standing to do more work as well as taking as many stand up breaks as possible.
